Rose Saltman

Welcome to the website of Rose Saltman, a writer and editor with a background in urban planning.

Rose grew up in Cape Town and has spent most of her life living in Sydney, Australia.

She started writing stories from the age of nine after a primary school teacher praised her for a short story on a speeding car. Over the years, she has maintained an intermittent practice of fashioning stories – real and imagined – out of everyday occurrences as a creative release from her work as an urban planner. She decided to get serious about pitching her work after having completed a Master of Arts in Non-fiction Writing in 2016.

Rose writes mainly creative non-fiction, although she will venture – albeit occasionally and somewhat tentatively – into the realm of fiction. Her short stories have been published in Australia and abroad.

Rose is a keen swimmer whose summer habitat is her local beach, Balmoral, and a heated pool in winter; this theme features large in her writing because she loves it too much not to share the passion. When not immersed in water or words, Rose can be found watching Scandi and any other Noir on TV, ministering to a Siamese cat and cooking up a storm with her husband. She loves freshly shucked oysters – she’ll open them herself! – firing up Cape Malay curries with chillies from the garden and baking fruit cakes that only get better with age.
